WOMAN SUES COMPANY FOR BLOCKED CHIMNEY

A woman who went into a coma after inhaling coal gas while taking a shower in a dormitory bathroom is suing her company for breach of duty.

Zhou, an employee in garment fatory in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province, was in hospital last week after breathing in the toxic coal gas caused by a blocked chimney.

The company denied Zhou's request on grounds that the block was caused by a trapped bird's nest, which was not in its control.

However, Zhou's lawyer said everything related to the dormitory was the company's responsibility asn Zhou was entitled to compensation.

32 WRITERS TAKE WEBSITE TO COURT OVER COPYRIGHT

Thirty-two writers in Hebei Province have taken a local website to court for copyright infringement.

The writers said they recently found their works on the website called "China Knowledge Web" which charged visitors who wanted to download them. But the writers were given no notice of this and have not been paid for the use of their works. The case is under investigation.

N.Y. GRAD TAKES UP VOLUNTARY TEACHING IN ORPHANAGE

A Chinese American has taken up voluntary teaching at an orphanage in Taiyuan of Shanxi Province.

Zhang Yingxuan, 22, has just graduated from a university in New York, and came to China a month ago. Half Chinese, Zhang said she loved Chinese children and chinese culture. She will teach the children how to paint for a month and then learn traditional Chinese medicine.

TIANJIN ELDER DRAWS ON DAILY WALKS TO MAKE MAP

A grandfather has drawn up a detailed map of his community in Tianjin, much to the delight of visitors.

Zhang Zhaorui, 71, has formed a habit of walking around his district over many years. He found many visitors all at sea in the fast-changing city. Zhang drew up his map over three years, and included every new construction and landmark. He printed it out and distributed them to local neighbourhood committees and also posted copies on the public bulletin boards.

80% OF HIGH-SCHOOLERS WANT HELP IN LOVE-SURVEY

A survey has found that 80 percent of high school students in Beijing want guidance on affairs of the heart.

Seven high school students conducted the survey recently covering more than 200 peers in six high schools in Beijing. About 80 percent of the respondents said they needed guidance from parents and teachers on "love issues". They also wanted schools to hold group discussions on such issues.

NIGHT ATTACK LEAVES 25 DEAD AT SHEEP PEN

Wild animals attacked a farmer's flock of sheep one night last week, leaving 25 died and 19 injured in a Beijing suburb.

Farmer Pang said he was woken up by the loud bark of his dog in the early hours on Thursday in a village of Haidian District. Pang rushed to the sheep pen to find 44 sheep lying on the ground with bleeding bites on the neck or back. Strange large footprints were found nearby. Local residents said they heard strange animal noises a month ago and suspect wolves on the prowl.

MOVE TO SEIZE AND DESTROY UNSAFE FOODS

The Beijing commerce authorities will launch a food recall system soon to ensure food safety in the markets.

Officials said unfit foodstuffs would be seized and destroyed, to prevent them from finding their way back into the market,as has happened in the past.

BROKER SENDS ADS SEEKING SPOUSES TO UNIVERSITIES

A marriage broking companysent out advertisements to 10 key universities in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, last week inviting spausal applications for two multi-milionaire entrepreneurs in their 30s.

The delicately-designed leaflets carried self-in-troductions by the two eligible bachelors and their requirements of their life partners.

The ads will also be sent to well-known office building in the city, said the company. The girls would have to go through several rounds of selections for the prize catch, it added.
